WHITE LIES AT WHITE MISCHIEF

By David Cano

nn

Lying, everyone does it. From huge throbbing deception to little throw away fibs, everyone’s guilty. But is it ever okay? We went to a White Mischief night at the Scala in King’s Cross for an Around The World in 80 Days themed party to find out. Here's what people said about white lies at White Mischief:

Julie

DP: When was the last time you lied?

J: Well I just lied about my name.

DP: When is it okay to lie?

J: I guess it’s all about whether you judge it to be okay or not. I think the only time it’s really okay to lie is to save someone from being hurt.

DP: When's it alright to tell a fib?

F: In theory I think it’s not. It will always end up getting you into all sorts of trouble. I guess the only time to do it is when you think you can get away with it.

DP: Do you remember the last time you lied to someone?

B: When I said it wouldn’t hurt.

A: Well, one time I was feeling naughty so I told a girl I was with that I was gay. I wanted to end it with her and it was the only thing I could think of. It worked but I have no idea if she ever found out I was lying.

DP: Are you the sort of people we can trust?

S: Oh my god, I lie so much I actually forget what’s a lie and what’s not. I just kind of do it to fill conversation. I really hate awkward silences so I just make up stuff.

DP: Do you really think this kind of behaviour is acceptable?

S: If you lie all the time, you start to believe your own lies and get carried away by your own stories. I think it’s okay to lie if you’re doing it to give someone confidence, like telling people they look good, even if they don’t.

I: When someone asks you whether they look good or not, you have to say something to reassure them. It’s mean not too. You have to be nice. It’s what good people do.

DP: So what was the last 'nice lie' you told?

I: I managed to convince lots of people that I’m Scottish.

DP: You've got a honest face. You've never told a lie, surely?

K: Last time I lied I lied to my boss about being at the doctors when really I couldn’t be bothered to go in.

DP: Oh, right. Weren't you afraid that this might break the bond of trust?

K: Truth is really an elastic concept. It’s always debatable and it really just depends on your opinion. I think it’s ok to lie to avoid hurting people.

DP: So, are you a liar too?

L: I make a point of not lying. It always causes more problems than it solves. I think there is always a way of telling the truth without compromising yourself.

DP: That's rather admirable. You'd never tell even a tiny little one?

L: If there’s a foxy girl and you want to get in her knickers then it is ok to tell a little white lie.

Emily:

DP: So, when did you last tell a porkie?

E: Last time I lied, I told people that I met and spoke to Dave Grohl but really I just saw him at a concert.

DP: Didn't you worry that you might upset Dave?

E: I think it’s ok to tell lies like that, when there’s no witnesses and no one can disprove your story. I try not to lie but I do occasionally like to stretch the truth. I really don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

So there you have it. Mulder was right - trust no one. You can check out the latest goings-on at White Mischief here.
