Tuca Vieira was born and lives in São Paulo. His work mainly focuses on the themes of cityscape, architecture and urbanism and his photos could perhaps be described as panoramic… even when they are tight portrait shots. His pictures were recently displayed at the Tate as part of the Global Cities exhibition. The image above is one of his most well known and shows the extreme social gulf but narrow physical gap between wealth and poverty in São Paulo. Below Tuca explains the context and thought behind some of his other work:
São Paulo (2007)
TUCA: I took this picture from a helicopter in 2007. I am very interested in the city as landscape. Sometimes the city is not so different from a jungle, a desert or a sea.

TUCA: This is the fantastic Copan building, a 1954 project of Oscar Niemeyer. It is the biggest residential building in Latin America, home of more then 5000 peolple. The main facade with the big concrete wave is well known, but the other side you can’t see from the street. For me it also represents the city - the indifference and brutality on one side, hiding the people and humanity in the other.
Santa Ifigenia Viaduct (2004)
TUCA: This popular street market doesn’t exist anymore. I also took this from a helicopter in 2004. It is amazing how the city organises itself, even without intention, creating patterns and shapes. This is what is so amazing about photographing cities, to extract the beauty from the chaos.
