The infographic was once an exciting and visual way to for designers and those in-the-know to convey information to the masses in an easily shareable and stimulating manner. Now, the backlash is here. For those of us that have been drowning in a world of links to graphics that are often badly spelled (50% of all infographics contain typos according to these made-up statistics) and utterly superfluous, we can finally laugh in a smug way at these infographics whilst still feeling above it all. Horrah for smugness and graphic design sins!

Let's start with something a little less sarky - an infographic that actually gives some pretty interesting stats about all the ones you've seen. So what have we learned? Perhaps most alarming, that the average infographic gives only 2.29 sources on average. But let's face it, who checks those anyway? The joy of putting text in a PNG is that no one is ever going to bother to type it out and look it up. Hell, even that 2.29 statistic could be totally made up. If this is the future of information, then we're all totally screwed. Also, I feel super sorry for the Serif fonts out there. Only 15%? Let's bring Cambria back in vogue everyone.

Video infographics have always been my favourite, like this gorgeous and insightful discussion of the Stuxnet virus. However, this advertisement for why infographics are SO TOTALLY AMAZING, backed with a super hip Strokes soundtrack, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. For one thing, the first statement claims that they 'show an expert understanding of a subject area or topic'. Not always true guys, have a look at the infamous and algorithmically incorrect pie chart by Fox News, for example. And for the most part, the statistics in these things just prove stuff you already knew, but this time with the aid of numbers that are presented in an unreadable manner.

Finally, an infographic that un-abstracts my feelings on the matter by a man with a fantastic quiff, brilliant glasses, and an accurately expressive face. Said man also runs a hilarious blog which you can find here, although I think he's outdone himself with this image. It does everything an infographic should; it makes you laugh, it's incredibly informative about this man's nonplussed nature and it is thoroughly pleasing to the eye. All hail the king of the Infographic Infographic!

This infographic englightens us to how companies that create infographics completely unrelated to their product can use them to funnel hits to their pages. Perturbing and informative, this graphic works to make the world of digg-using spammers transparent to all of us. These companies are exploiting Google's Page ranking in order to bag themselves the maximum internet traffic. I'm sure Mister Larry Page is less than pleased. Also, there's a graphically rendered boob at the top.

Anger + sarcasm is seemingly the ultimate equation for internet metauthority. The above infographic points out everything wrong with this kind of image sharing within the context of a shareable image. I feel like I've opened up a wormhole over the course of this article. Anyways, you can find similarly annoyed graphics here, here and here. Honestly, there's loads of these things complaining about how they slow down webpages, how they're often badly designed and how no one gives a flying crap anymore. Apart from me, who gives enough of a crap to list them all here. What am I doing with my life? Perhaps I should make a pie chart of my daily activities...
