To coincide with the Mathew Williamson book that is being released this October, Somerset House are holding a display of his work, offering a unique insight into the life and work of one of the most influential British designers in the industry today. The exhibition will display and animate aspects of the book and will feature photographs, sketches, quotes, videos as well as selected garments from Williamson’s archive.
The lavishly illustrated book explores the designer’s life and work, everything from his debut collection Electric Angels at London Fashion Week in 1997 to his 10 year anniversary in 2007. It will feature mood boards, celebrity shoots, scrapbook cuttings and reveal his influences and inspirations. Packed with contributions from some of the biggest names in fashion such as Zandra Rhodes, Anna Wintour, Alexandra Shulman, and Sir Paul Smith, it features a foreword by Sienna Miller who says, “When I step into one of Matthew’s dresses I feel like I am stepping into his world, which is colourful, ethereal and dreamlike”. Williamson's upbringing in Manchester, however, was a far cry from the 'colourful, ethereal and dreamlike' world described by Sienna Miller. 'A grey city in a grey country' is how Williamson describes the hometown that left him craving for vibrant colours.
The Central Saint Martin’s graduate has been in the industry for 13 years and has had a fantastic and diverse career building up an excellent reputation. His debut collection in the mid nineties was a unique collection of bright and detailed pieces that were highly recognisable Matthew Williamson signature aethetic and worn by the likes of Kate Moss, Helena Christensen and Jade Jagger. His career went from strength to strength and he has since collaborated with H&M, taken over Italian fashion House LVMH and won Designer of the Year at 2008 British Fashion Awards.
From creative teenager to influential designer, Williamson is no doubt one of the most respected designers out there. The exhibition and book will offer a different perspective on the innovative international success for anyone interested in contemporary fashion, fashion design or admirers of Matthews Williamson’s work.
