Geo Law - Local Original

For Geo Law, the streets of Sheffield are his playground. The independence ethos and liberal outlook of the Sheffield residents, means that this is the perfect place to be an original.

“When I was starting out as a freelance illustrator, I felt Sheffield was the perfect hub for me to earn some stripes working amongst its graphics scene” states Geo. Rising from strength to strength, Geo’s unique style as a Graphic Artist has quickly earned him a reputable standing amongst Sheffields artists and musicians. Citing Kid acne and Pete Mckee as having an influence over aspiring creatives, “Their painted murals are dotted on the sides of buildings and alley ways and give the city a nice identity, its inspiring to walk past them and they’ve given me the belief that in some way, the city is there for the taking to express yourself”.

Having honed his skills at Nottingham Trent University, Geo picked up, packed up and took to the Honey pot that is Sheffield. With the tight community growing from the roots of the city, we have a sense of pride for our art and music. It all stems from the D.I.Y attitude, nobody rides for free, “The community here is open and willing to share and help each other, music and art walk hand in hand and its hard to miss in some cases. “ With areas such as Devonshire Street in the Cultural quarter of the city being recognised by Geo for their “cool style and healthy mix of activity and fashion” it is a perfect place to establish yourself as a serious artist. “What talent that Sheffield has is very humble about itself which to me gives it a comfortable understated cool about the place. Perfect for possible new creative talent to emerge.”

Bars, clubs and cafes around the Devonshire area of town, have been lucky enough to have Geo add his touch to the decor (The Forum, The Common Room, DQ nightclub and the Bowery to name but a few). His work also featured in the massively successful city centre tramlines festival last summer. With such a high concentration of independent bars, clubs, cafes and art spaces in Sheffield, the whole city is potentially his canvas.

Some artists/musicians these days fail to muster up any originality, choosing instead to rehash and replay, ripping on other styles in all too standardised replicas, among this artists like Geo shine even brighter. Geo Law is an artist to watch out for, you won’t hear him knocking, he’ll just bust down the door. His work is sharp, different and above all it’s original. Oh and did I mention it’s straight out of Sheffield? Yeah I think I may have.
