America the beautiful

Bush's Biggest Blunders

I was pretty darned excited to see W. - Oliver Stone’s biopic on George W. Bush, which has just opened at the London BFI Film Festival. Having seen the trailer I was expecting a sort of presidential version of Gore Vidal’s Caligula with beer fuelled frat parties, car crashes and cocaine binges. We’re all dolefully familiar with Bush’s latest, greatest fuck ups – Iraq, Afghanistan etc etc – but hear far too little about his earlier boyhood errings.

But nice though it is to watch a less than complimentary film about an American president – especially one still in office - the film doesn’t really serve up the kind of juicy titbits on W’s reckless youth that you might have been hoping for. So here we break down the best screw ups from W’s wayward youth. I say youth… I mean up until the age of forty. Indeed that is about how long it took this son of one of the most privileged and well connected families in the world to actually grow up make anything of himself.
