Rolo Tomassi
That shriek coming from Sheffield? It's this lot.
So cats, you’re about to embark on a major UK tour – is this the scary make or break one?
We’re excited and a bit restless. It’s been two months since we finished our previous tour in June, you see. It’s cool to relax for a bit but we’ve been playing the same songs for quite a while now – theyre getting boring. It’ll be great to play some new material.
Holy Roar is the best name I have ever heard of for a record label. Do you (I motion to Evra, vocals) try and channel the gods of bitty hardcore?
(perplexed) No, not really.
When I checked your Myspace, your influences were this strange sign that turns out to be something or one called Hi Wonderland. I was pleased it wasn’t Kabbalah or whatever.
Hi Wonderland is the label that one of our friends works from. He hooked us up with some free stuff and we thought it was a nice, unobtrusive way of promoting him a little bit. It’s quite an innocent logo; we liked.

How is a reporter meant to describe your sound?
Well, we’re heavy. We’ve been telling all the journalists that we’re "progressive hardcore". How about “Futuristic metal?” or “Futurama shred?”
Whose your favourite band on your label?
Well, we actually record with Hassle Records, but on Holy Roar it’s gotta be Throats, who’re actually coming on tour with us! They’re chuggy and thrashy and great guys. We had a really good time playing The Macbeth with them. Good times, and we’ll be having more as we drive around the country!
How come you guys are such sweethearts when your music is so HARD?
We started playing heavy stuff, and didn’t want to compromise. We wanted to make music that was really energetic and lively – I mean, what’s the point if you don’t put everything into it? We’re fucking ferocious! We grew up loving bands like Dillinger Escape Plan: bands that are more than just the music. They bring something special when you see them live, and we think that’s how it should be – a spectacle.
You’ve got a gig lined up with the Ghost Frequency rather soon. We’re gonna go talk to them on Tuesday. Most people really fancy Doran their lead singer. How about you?
He’s a dreamboat. He wears our t-shirts sometimes and makes them look good. We really like the band and like doing shows with them – we’re playing at the Old Blue Last, so it should be great!

Has it been happy days since your triumphant set at Download Festival?
Yeah that was really weird, the fact that we even have a fanbase – fuck it, the word fanbase is a strange one to us. I mean, getting clapped as you walk on stage, having people knowing the words and your songs that haven’t even been released properly makes you feel so good. But, I mean, we’re still getting the Megabus home tonight, so, you know... It evens out pretty swiftly, too.
How’s the scene in Sheffield since you left it?
Well, we all lived in blissful yet maddening rural isolation out there. Sheffield’s got about one good place to go. We have been in absolute disarray since we left.
