If you like your music meek and servile, then you will experience no pleasure from iieyes. The Midwest trio of JT, Amber and Billy have grown up with punk stencilled onto their synaptic pathways. We caught up with their creative hub JT in his tattoo parlour in the Illinois.

Hello, so what tattoo were you just doing?

It was putting the family crest on my dad. I have a record store, massage parlour and a studio all in the same complex here. It's not like I'm Richard Branson I just like to do a lot...

How did the band get started?

Well the singer Billy and I were in a prior group, Laser Mountain, where we were hanging out together all the time playing music and doing psychedelics. Really enjoying it all until the band split up. We started another one instantly, not to be taken seriously but then people started taking it seriously about two days after we put up the Myspace. I've been playing guitar since I was 10 and I'm 27 now, so I'm not going to change - this is me.

What's it like being in a band with your wife?

That came about through being on tour, having minimal room and always being together. We just thought, 'You should make noise with us' and she said she used to play the saxophone so I bought her one. Honestly it's the same as our marriage, all band members have that kind of relationship so I guess being married makes it easier. Billy's like our kid, we tuck him in at night. He's like a good dog we look after.

A lot of your music sounds unruly, chaotic even. Is that hard to organise?

Without sounding arrogant, I write everything - it's all planned out. I'm a huge believer in organised chaos, that's what this genre we call 'noise pop' is all about. But any noise, texture or sound can be put into this. We're not scared of jagged notes or playing in the wrong time or whatever.

What do people do at your gigs? What kind of movements do they make?

It's actually like house dancing - kids bouncing up and down looking happy. I would never advocate moshing, although we are quite aggressive on stage, throwing guitars about and screaming.

Our current theme is Government. Who did you vote for in the last election?

No one. I mean everyone wanted Obama to win and I was excited before he inevitably revealed a slightly disappointing face. It's always the same person in office. It's Government. I don't vote in America - if you do vote, you work within in the system and I don't believe in that system. I believe in doing things for ourselves. If we want money or food we go get it ourselves.

Growing up (when I was naive and didn't realise you couldn't be honest and a politician) I used to admire Ghandi. But basically I don't trust politicians and I don't trust any rich people.

So what if you get rich?

I don't care - it would mean more for my kids I guess. I've maintained my punk rock ethics and living life matters more to me. I've been so broke I was homeless. I slept on this slab for a week once - it was sheltered from the rain and fitted me perfectly.
