In his latest project, director David Cronenberg teams with TIFF and the Canadian Film Centre's Media Lab to co-produce Body/Mind/Change. Helmed by creative director Lance Weiler (The Last Broadcast, Head Trauma) and with Cronenberg starring, the new art project definitely seems interesting, albeit in an eerie way.
Cronenberg has spent the last year quietly licensing the fictional (yet scarily plausible) technology seen in his films The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, eXistenZ and Shivers for an eight figure sum earlier this year. Now, directors engendering their intellectual property for use in spin off books, games and TV shows is nothing new, yet crazy Dave's plan to actually transform his work into genuine biotechnology is somewhat of a first.
The press release (via Arrow in the Head) states that the device will "[enable] participants to experience what it is like to live inside a David Cronenberg film", which doesn't at all sound absolutely terrifying.
According to the site, the device "reinvents the recommendation engine to make discovering the things you need, love or desire effortless. This state of the art biotech implant will guarantee you personalized recommendations that are 99.999% relevant all the time. POD grows with you to become an intuitive companion, enhancing your life and storing the best that the world has to offer for immediate recall at any time. After a light training period, POD will be able to predict your deepest unfulfilled desires - Even the ones you didn't know you had."
If you would like this to happen to you then sign up at www.bodymindchange.ca where you can register to be on the list to receive the next generation bio-tech recommendation engine, called Personal-On-Demand (POD). Cronenberg himself is the first on the list, and on the launch on Oct 25th, "registered participants will be guided through an episodic interactive narrative that functions as a simulator for training their PODs. Completing this three-part experience will guarantee them a unique POD generated from their behaviour during the simulations."
After doing all that, your very own POD will be available for pick-up at the close of the David Cronenberg: Evolution exhibition, January 2014 at the BMC Labs installation, located in the CIBC Canadian Film Gallery on the 4th floor of the TIFF Bell Lightbox... in Toronto, Canada. If you haven't been saving up your air miles, you could probably get a second hand POD on ebay after a while, although you'd have to run the risk of it coming with someone else's recommendations...
...Such as this charming fellow's.
