An Evening of Great Films and Cross Dressing at The Duke OF York’s
On Friday the 16th the Duke of York’s is showing two of the most iconic films of all time. It just so happens they’re both kind of about men wearing women’s clothes…(and other things).
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) is one of the most written about and studied films of all time. It also remains as tense and shocking today as it was on its original release. A new print has been released (for its 50th anniversary) and the Duke’s are showing the film all week.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) is one of the most notorious stage to screen adaptations and is believed to be one of the longest running releases in film history, mostly down to its infamous midnight screenings, and that’s exactly what’s happening at the Dukes.
Although one film is a tense, hugely cinematic thriller and the other a comedy musical, the similarities between the films are marvellous. Both films follow some good looking, (seemingly innocent) middle Americans getting lost in the rain driving down a highway and pulling over in a remote and desolate location (a motel and a random castle). What happens next involves meeting some strange and disturbing characters, attempted murders, some mild nudity and dudes dressed as ladies! The film’s use these plot elements in very different ways and for very different purposes, but that’s part of the beauty and versatility of cinema. Taking typical and seemingly generic plot and narrative ideas, then using the tools of cinema to create some truly unique and original films in hugely different genres and styles.
Psycho delivers true fear, shock and tension through Hitchcock’s masterful understanding of how to frame shots, construct scenes and edit them all together. The Rocky Horror Picture Show takes the best of stage show zeal, humour, songs and down right camp-ness to extremes to deliver one of the most unique and weirdly enjoyable film experience your likely to have.
So, if an evening of movie similarities and contrasts is your thing, or if you just want to indulge in some truly fantastic cinema, head down to the Duke Of York’s for a great night. But remember doing the ‘Time Warp’ can be laugh, but dressing up like your mum and stabbing away at people is really not a good idea!...well…the cross dressing thing is not for me to judge!
Psycho is showing at 6.30pm and tickets cost normal Dukes prices.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is showing a midnight and tickets cost £10…but all the proceeds are going to charity so it’s all worth it!
