SAM SPARRO

Few good things come of McDonalds. Sure there was the Mclibel trial and it’s positive effects on multinational companies and corporate culpability. Then there’s the Big Mac I guess, surely one of the coolest items of junk food of all time, but it tapers off pretty quickly there, descending into labor abuses, union-busting, pointless lawsuits and sugar on your fries (eew)... plus shitty Justin Timberlake records. Hamburglar was always pretty cool though, stoled all the burgers and didn’t afraid of anything. One of the few other good things to come from the shadow of the golden arches is singer, songwriter extraordinaire (really) and one-time child actor Sam Sparro. Launched into the world of celebrity and fame via a Maccy Dee’s commercial in the 80’s, going onto release his first single, Cottonmouth in late 2007 and scoring a number four in the charts for Black and Gold, also a theme tune for Skins in early 2008. Without further ado, here’s some words from the man himself…

DP: Hello Sam.

Sam: Hey Don't Panic.

DP: So how long have you been doing 'the music thing'?

Sam: I started playing piano when I was about six and singing around the same time. I first started programming my own beats and stuff when I was about 15.

DP: What are your plans for the future (releases etc)?

Sam: I'm putting my show together and getting ready to go out and do some shows.

DP: Is Sam Sparro your actual name? What does it mean?

Sam: It's not my actual name. My uncle used to call me "little Sammy Sparrow" and then years later a friend in London called me Sam Sparrow... I decided to keep it. There's these bumper stickers in the states with a big W with a big red line through it... as an anti George W Bush campaign... so I decided to drop the W. too ; )

DP: W.o.r.s.t gig?

Sam: I think the worst one was at the Viper Room which some people thought was really great... and was one of the links in a chain of events that got us signed. It felt like playing to a brick wall.

DP: And the best?

The best one was my Record Release party for my EP at this place in Downtown LA called BORDELLO. Lots of things went wrong, but it was packed out wall to wall and the energy was amazing and the crowd was brilliant!
