We recently ran a competition in cahoots with Tapedeck & Fallout's glorious clubnight Bosh! to get a new flyer designed up for them. The winner turned out to be Ilyanna Kerr (see entry here), who also did the cover for The More Assured's debut single, All In Your Head (if you travelled on the tube last winter you'll probably recognise the sticker).
Ilyanna, like most girls, has a father. Her pa's name is Stan and he happens to share her awesome artistic ability. Nature versus nurture played out on canvas. We made them give each other's work a bit of a critiquing. Here's what they had to say:
Stan on Ilyanna:
Amy - see lead image
"This painting has successfully combined the painterly treatment of Amy’s face with a strong chaotic abstraction, enclosing her on one half of the canvas in a 50/50 split and so conveying Amy at odds with the crazy glitter of her environment. With this contrast Ilyanna has given us the opportunity to see Amy in a different way, perhaps more empathetically."

The More Assured
"In this sequence of connected posters Ilyanna has pushed her graphic treatment to a bright and exciting level, incorporating figurative, textural and decorative graphic elements to produce eye-catching publicity material for The More Assured. The flat overall edge to edge composition and colour has the driving force and excitement of the music she is advertising."

Frederick
"The painting Frederick has a masterly touch. Compositionally elegant in a modern, irreverent way, the fluidity of the paint application compliments the humorous yet romantic tonal precision of the image that carries it to a high technical level. The classical feel is emphasised by the warm pinkness of the lips against the complimentary cobalt blue of the background. Structurally the diagonal of the face and lace shirt is firmly anchored to the vertical line from top to bottom, running down the face and lapel."

"Apparently very different and more graphic in style than Amy or Frederick, Ilyanna has taken the graphic element to a decorative level so successfully that we are, though almost unaware of it, very close to the territory of Alphonse Mucha.
Ilyanna on Stan:

Bob Dylan

Ilyanna
"This portrait of me is one of my father’s favourites; the harmonious use of colour and the reflective pose of the figure disguise and act as a counterbalance to the compositional complexity and the tension created by the use of close tones and diagonal composition."

Away With the Fairies
"This is one of my personal favourites. I think the dreaminess of the expression is emphasised by the unfocused background. The use of colour and light give the painting an otherworldliness, which elevate it out of the realm of the sentimental. Though very different from the Bob Dylan, it has a quality which connects it."

Contact
"My father’s use of colour in his work is very distinctive. He uses it to capture a particular mood, sometimes masking the strong compositional element. I think this black and white self-portrait manages to communicate the captured moment without the use of colour, allowing the strong lines of the composition to become more prominent."
