If you’re into pop-fused electronica then you’ve no doubt felt the mighty lash of The Whip pierce your pathetic eardrums. Band members Bruce (vocals, guitar), Danny (keyboards), Little Fee (drums), and Nathan (bass), have been arousing quite a quickening of pulse in certain circles. These jovial Mancunians are touring relentlessly right now so I took my chance and snatched a quick word with drummer Lil’ Fee as she prepared for the next gig. This article was originally intended for the Dance issue - hence the dance-based questions.
What’s the wildest shit that’s ever gone down on tour?
We did this one gig in a massive, tall warehouse with loads of floors in London. It was this huge rave and it went on till like five in the morning. We’d finished playing and the guys weren’t really up for any more partying but I was quite drunk. So I met some of the organisers and they said there was something going on upstairs. So I went upstairs with them and we walked into this full-blown fetish party. It was crazy; there were all these girls with their tits out, PVC, leather, guys with their arse cheeks out – the lot. It was a right laugh. I think I made some new fans. I ended up waking up the next day in a squat on the floor next to a smashed out window.
So, the name of the band… any S&M connection there?
Ha! I don’t think so. We just chose it cos it’s a nice, sharp sounding word. Then again, Bruce our lead singer is always describing things as erotic so maybe deep down there’s some filth.
Seeing as you make dance music (sort of) what’s your favourite dance?
My favourite has to be “dusting the dandruff.” You get your right hand, put it to your left shoulder and do two little dusts then do the same with the other hand. I’m telling you, it’s the one. You should do it next time you’re out.
How about the rest of the band, how much dancing goes on on-stage?
When we’re up there we all give it as much as possible. I can’t really dance that much sitting behind a drum set but as soon as I’m not playing I’m up on my feet. We try and get the audience going as much as possible. At our last gig in Southampton the stage got invaded by like 20 big, drunk blokes. They were dancing about and stage diving straight onto the floor.
What would you do if you had only three minutes to live?
[Laughs] Oh god, I don’t wanna say it…
Oh go on…
No, I can’t.
Please…
Ah… Well, I guess I would probably want my last moment of erotica.
Naturally.
Oh no, everyone’s gonna read this now and think I’m well dirty!
FIN.
