THE POLISH ON BRITISH CULTURE

By Richard Parker

Polish Main

We’re quite horrible to the Polish, really. Imagine if you lived in a country that blamed you for everything from a lack of £50 notes to eating the wildlife to nicking billions of pounds from our economy to send home to the motherland... So It’s probably only fair to let them have a good old dig right back at us. I decided that I would go and chat to some Poles and give them a chance to step up on the soap box. For the purposes of this interview I’ll refer to them only as K, E and T.

DP: So what's the first thing about Britain that really got you down when you arrived here?

K: The food. It’s hard to get good fruit and vegetables. You can get good food here, but it’s often very expensive!

E: The weather! The winter I don’t mind so much but it’s so wet and dreary so often in the summer!

T: A lot of fake politeness.

DP: Did you have any negative experiences?

K: Well, when I got here a border guard wanted to deport me. When I arrived here Poland wasn’t part of the EU so things were stricter I think. I was a student and just wanted to come to England for a bit to improve my English. This official approached me and started asking me lots of questions about what I was doing here and why I had come to England. I told him that I was here to learn English. He pointed to a banner behind me that said that by 2010 most of the world will speak Chinese and suggested that I go there. When I said that I would still prefer to speak English he said I should’ve gone to Greece or Bulgaria instead. Then he asked me about my whole family history to see if I had access to enough funds to come into the country. I obviously couldn’t tell him that I planned to do some ‘unofficial’ work if I ran out of cash before I planned to leave. He eventually told me to wait on one side while he dealt with other people and then interrogated me for hours in a private room. After a while he said that he’d let me go if I agreed to hand over my number and go on a date with him.

DP: And did you?

K: I gave him the number - I would’ve have done anything to just get out of there at that point! I had to avoid him for a few months after that.

DP: Scandalous! What's the single biggest problem that you have with British culture?

K: I’ve been here for about 10 years so I feel like a part of British culture to be honest.

T: Probably that "best nation on the world" attitude. People are very proud – but they tend to look down on foreigners, especially those from developing countries.

DP: Do you read the Daily Mail?

K: I read the Polish news and a proper newspaper. People in Poland are aware of the kind of thing that the Daily Mail prints. Most of the time people react just by mocking it, other times with anger and sometimes with just sadness.

T: I don't read it, but have seen some of the headings that were not very friendly towards foreigners. The popularity of this paper is scary but knowing what its target audience is I'm not surprised at the attitude they present.

E: Polish people are aware of the kind of paper that the Daily Mail is. We have equivalents in Poland. There is plenty of less negative stuff coming out of better papers like The Guardian.

DP: Would you want to stay in Britain forever? What are the reasons that would make you want to leave?

T: It's a really great country to live in, especially London – a multicultural megapolis where you can find bit of all the world’s cultures. But the weather conditions will probably have me migrating southwards looking for some sunny Mediterranean spot to stay in before long!

DP: From the perspective of someone who didn't grow up in this culture, what do you think is the worst thing about how the British people behave?

T: Buzzing is Britain’s big problem - everybody drinks on daily basis here! And they drink a lot too. Pub culture is something I still can’t understand.

Thanks Poles!
