pop fighters!

Despite having possibly the silliest name for a band ever, Dananananaykroyd are forging a serious reputation as one of the most exciting live bands around. Describing their sound as “fight pop”, the self confessed Glaswegian “dorks” have managed to generate quite some excitement without even having an album out. I spoke to one of the band’s drummers, Callum, during his break from work at a computer game shop.

What’s work like?

Yeah it’s alright. I’ve just been playing Rock Band, it’s life changing.

I hear you’re all quite into computer games…

Yeah we are. Duncan our guitar player is a real World of Warcraft guy. He works from home so he’s probably on it all day. I just got the new Final Fantasy and I’ve done about ten hours on it already. I don’t know how I dedicate so much time to it, I guess being single helps.

So, the band’s name, what the hell is that about?

Ah the name... that old chestnut. It’s just a silly name. We don’t really have a specific reason for having it. It’s a joke really that started with my flatmate who’s a spastic. He just said it once and it stuck. Now it’s too late.

So you’re not big Dan Aykroyd fans?

Oh yeah, we totally are. I’m younger than the rest of the guys so I missed out on most of his films but the original Ghostbusters, that’s the best.

What made you decide to have two drummers?

That was a mistake really. We were rehearsing one day and during a cigarette break I just jumped on the drums, we tried it and it was just insanely loud. It gives us this intensity. It’s like getting punched in the face by someone you love. We try and make our live shows intense, just create a loud and fun experience.

What’s “fight pop”?

We haven’t given it that much thought really. We’re basically just a bunch of total pussies so we make aggressive pop music. It’s silly like a lot of things in the band.

You a pop fan?

Yeah, we’re all into pop. I’m quite partial to whatever’s going round.

You’ve been described as one of the “finest live bands in Britain”. How do you feel about that?

Quite chuffed. We put a lot of effort into our shows. We don’t want to be just another band. We give it as much energy as possible so it’s nice if even just one person says that.

So is there an album on the way?

Yeah we’re working on it now. The guys are writing new songs, which is good because it’s something we haven’t done for a while. We’re going on tour too. We’re trying to do as much as we can. We want to play at places that don’t usually have bands, try and rock out a village.
