Last weekend was the annual three-day North London street bender known as the Camden Crawl. Based on the age-old Camden tradition of walking around in a completely poncey and ridiculous outfit, avoiding the authorities and the ‘emptying of bottles and filling of wenches’. Oh, and spending approximately 100 percent of the time queuing outside the inn when everyone decides to come and see your favorite band at the same time you do. For Myspace's event Enter Shikari were called in to do a completely secret live show. We were informed of the venue exactly one hour and thirty-three minutes before opening and told NOT to tell anybody anything. NO exceptions. After the gig we spoke to Rou (vocals, keyboards) and Rob (drummer) about the gig, being in a band and why top-heavy corporate structures in the music entertainment sector are as over as spray-on neon jeans, slogan t-shirts and still wearing trucker caps...

ROB: “We’ve been off the road for about four or five months now and it definitely feels good to be back. We rarely get much time off so it’s been good to have a little time for myself. I mean literally ‘a little time’ by that. We’ve been spending time recording, practicing and all the stuff that goes with being in a band outside of being on the road... which is a lot when you run your own label. I got a few days to spend with friends and family and then that’s it. Now it’s time to get back to playing good music and putting on heavy gigs.
"We haven’t played a place like this for a quite a while. It's good to do these sorts of things when they come up. Nowadays we do a lot of large-arena gigs and big shows with lots of other big-name bands so it’s cool to still do the smaller venues when we get the chance. I thought the gig went pretty well although he doesn’t seem to think so.”
ROU: “I think we’ve had better."
ROB: “I know we have had way sicker gigs but this is pretty early in the day and the venue have kept the numbers down so it’s not as rammed and chaotic as it would usually be. I enjoyed the gig though and so did the audience. I like our backdrop. We made it literally a few minutes before the gig. If you want to put on a professional show there’s nothing like a good backdrop and that is nothing like a good backdrop! But it’s cool, it’s ours and it’s a laugh. It's about the music that’s happening on the stage at the end of the day anyway.

"The crowd were cool but weren't really goin' mental. It was good but we’ve done way better. We’ve had gigs where five or six ambulances have had to turn up one after the other. Since we first started out we’ve had the kids bouncing off the walls. Some of those early gigs were some of the craziest. We believe in what we do and so do our fans so that’s what brings the energy. We’ve always been big believers in doing what we believe in and making things work. That’s why we never needed to sign our lives away to some major. We managed to build a fan-base without them. We managed to sell our music without them. We managed to sell out the Astoria without them so what reason would we have to sign away our right to make our own decisions and do our own thing the way we see it?
"I guess big labels can be good for paying for stuff if you can’t get the money to do things anywhere else. We got the money side of the deal thing without signing away all our copyright. We got everything we needed from a label from a P&D deal. We get a budget to help with promoting the album, pressing our records and getting our CDs in the shops and can keep an eye on everything ourselves instead of it all happening behind closed doors. We can promote our music via myspace and the internet. We don’t get some guy force-feeding us ideas and then dropping us because the ideas weren’t good ones. We’ve seen so many bands, some of our favorite bands dropped for failing to sell as many records as the label predicted or expected, we just really couldn’t go that route. It’s more work for us but we prefer it this way. And even if we do fuck up at least we fucked up ourselves and can learn from it.
"There’s obviously something seductive about ‘getting signed’ when you’re a new band and I can see why some people look toward that sort of thing but there are other options nowadays. With sites like Myspace there is now opportunity for artists to do it for themselves and make it on their own terms. We still get to play with big signed bands. We're playing with Linkin Park in a few weeks which will be huge. We’ve played with all the big names and done all the big festivals. We played Reading with Korn one time. That was a bit uncomfortable. Most of the crowd were cool with us but there was this one little band of goth-kids by the side trying to heckle us or whatever.”

ROU: “I ended up in the middle of them during a stage invasion and just charged through them.”
DP: “I actually used to like some of Korn’s stuff way back, ages ago.”
OLI (photographer): “Haha.” *pointing*
ROU: *facepalm*
ROB: “Umm, okay then.”
DP: “Umm, Yeah, that was ages ago. It was acceptable back then… Maybe… Most of the time I used to listen to cooler music like techno Drum and Bass labels from Germany and way underground, cop killer rap music and hardcore and stuff. Seriously guys I mean it guys.”
