China’s burgeoning finance markets have been every economist's hot topic for ages now, but their cultural boom has crept from below the bamboo curtain at a slower pace. The Victoria & Albert Museum’s new China Design Now exhibition is helping to showcase the artists riding the wave of Beijing’s billions. With the Olympics having suffered a bit of a publicity setback due to those pesky human rights issues, this exhibition is like a nice soothing dollop of cultural Bonjela.

To cover the full gamut of art and design from a nation larger than the USA in a single exhibition is fairly ambitious, so in order to give a sense of structure the exhibition is divided geographically into three cities.

Shenzhen, the first of Deng Xiaoping’s controversial Special Economic Zones, is dubbed Frontier City, as its average age of 27 has generated a huge young commercial art scene.

The exhibition then heads north to Shanghai, the Dream City, an affluent centre associated with luxury goods and the aspirational ‘Four Great Things’ (house, car, computer and mobile phone) that codify the Chinese ‘good life’.

The tour ends with a focus on China's flagship Olympic city, Beijing, which is imagined as the Future City, with depictions of the National Stadium and the Capital Airport extension illustrating an architectural vision of China yet-to-come.
