Many of you will be aware of the much-touted ‘anti-folk scene’, one of the many musical pigeon-holes to have sprung up in recent times. Originating in the States (where else?) approximately 10,000 years ago, the movement reared it’s acoustic-strumming, bearded head on British shores at some point in the early-to-mid noughties’ eventually getting hyped by the mainstream media around late '06 when Time Out described anti-folk as being one of London’s ‘hottest subcultures’.
Cue the inevitable influx of bandwagon-jumpers, scenesters and chart-wannabes descending on ‘the future of the UK scene’. One of the few redeeming features of a scene this media-led and contrived are the true diamonds-in-the-rough that inadvertently inspired it all to begin with, the achingly-awaited Lightspeed Champion debut Falling off the Lavender Bridge being one of those (few) oh-so-shiny, shiny diamonds.

The album’s name, a reference to a lavender-filled frog given to the album's creator Dev Hynes as a child, due to his difficulty sleeping, perfectly sums up the album's awkward and dreamy subject matter. A scientist by nature, Dev has been experimenting with playing in bands since his early teens. He has to date been a part of a number of terribly-named outfits including one called The New Tom Cruise Film, several awful hardcore bands and, of course, Test Icicles, which he tells us "did actually mean something. Some of those songs were really deep if you look hard enough."

Don’t Panic got a hold of the Lightspeed album a few weeks back and have decided that it is the sound of lost weekends, general awkwardness, failed sexual experiments and wry observations from the edge of hipster-land. We met up with Dev at a group exhibition at The Brick Lane Gallery. This is what was said:
DP: The album seems so personal, how much of it is really you though? I mean did you ever really puke in a girl’s mouth? Aren’t you tee-total? Did she still put out? I can’t stop thinking about it.
LC: No, I was just trying to imagine the worst thing that could happen in that situation.
DP: Oh, I was thinking you must have been pretty wasted for that to happen...
LC: Yeah, I don’t really drink a lot, I have puked a lot though.
DP: What did the puke taste like?
LC: Puke.
DP: I generally find girl-puke to be less disgusting than guy-puke depending on how hot the girl is. One girl I went out with could down a bottle of Vodka and puke it directly back into my mouth, saved us a fortune on drinks down at Fabric. It was kind of hot also.
LC: Okay.
DP: Are you actually from Nebraska? Why would you go all the way out there to record the album? Is that where you thought of it? Puking in the girl’s mouth I mean. Was she an American girl? The same girl from'I could have done this myself'? Maybe she deserved it then. How do American girls react to guys puking on them? I’ve seen videos on the internets that suggest Japanese girls are all for it (NSFW).
LC: No, it didn’t happen there. I’m actually from Houston. I went out to Nebraska to record because I really wanted Mike Mogis (resident producer for Saddle Creek records and member of Bright Eyes) to produce it. That’s where he lives so that’s where I went. Most of the contributors on the album are from the UK also, so we ended up having to fly loads of people out there. It was fun.
DP: What was Nebraska like then? Was everyone freaked out by the puke thing?
[At this point Dev starts ignoring the puke questions]
LC: It was pretty boring, other than recording there wasn’t a lot to do. I wanted to go to a few hip-hop clubs but my friends out there suggested that really wasn’t a good idea.
DP: Few people know that you also rap under the name of Nigga Bullshit. Is there ever going to be a Nigga Bullshit album? Will it feature you being sick? That would be SICK!
LC: Maybe if I get the chance to re-record everything I lost when I broke my laptop.
DP: Do you think you might actually stick with it this time, or are we going to be receiving press releases about your ‘new’ band by the time we get back to the office?
LC: No, I’m enjoying doing this. I’m hoping the album will do well but I love it and believe in it and that’s all I mainly care about...
