ZOOM SOLO

Zoom, Bristol-based street photographer long hotting up on the underground scene, is to hold his first solo exhibition early next month. Taking place at the Donuts store on Friday December 10, this one-night event will showcase brand new Zoom prints alongside the best of his existing work. Definitely worth a peek (as long as you’re not too scared of clowns).

Marked by a distinctive Zoom style rather than overriding narrative or theme, the body of work on offer includes both portraiture and cityscapes shot against an urban Bristol background that is highlighted through the repeated use of the wide angle lens. Along with bold use of light and colour, where the play between artificial and natural light of the city is neatly underlined, this creates a dynamic and punchy feel that is pleasingly uneasy on the eye.

In the portraits, the question of identity is played with through the use of masks, hats and sunglasses, most notably the clown mask, which hide and distort the faces of the models. The tension that results is only increased by the aggressive power implicit in the stare behind: alongside an apparent desired anonymity, there is a demand for attention and a shout for recognition.
Nevertheless, despite the grit of the work, there is an energy and humour lurking outside the shadows that keeps it balanced, vigorous and fresh.

But, there’s more to Zoom than photography. A multi-disciplinary affair, the night will also introduce his new street-wear brand thirty5million. Aptly named ‘The Boogieman Project’, this first collection comprises a range of tees and sweatshirts with each design based around those notorious evil clown masks. And with only a limited number of these wears available, they are sure to go fast.

Dec 10, 7-10pm at Donuts, 8 Perry Road, Bristol BS1 5BQ.
