Britain is in a financial crisis, and the only foreseeable solution involves the deployment of the Queen’s personal helicopter to deliver an underage Russian prostitute to an visiting ally. Another day, another disaster for the PM and his advisors in Yes Prime Minister.

The play, adapted from the television series, is quick, witty and will undoubtedly remain one of the best comedies on stage for years. The plot centres around a 10 trillion pound deal that Britain might enter into with ‘Kumranistan’, from which the Foreign Minister proceeds to make shocking requests. The PM and his team’s morals are called into question, testing their boundaries and revealing the lengths they’re willing to go to, to protect the British reserve.

Every character brings a different element to the table: Sir Humphrey Appleby is as posh and devious as his name suggests. The PM is as pathetic, selfish and out of the loop as expected, always asking ‘But, what do I do?’, and Bernard Woolley is, well… woolly!

The play is accessible to all and does not require the viewer to have any detailed knowledge of politics, but those that are up to speed will enjoy the jokes all the more. In one particularly relevant scene, the PM stops his advisor from using the telephone, warning ‘it might be hacked!’.

Viewers will likely find themselves warming to the PM as his stupidity becomes increasingly endearing. People may even be surprised to find themselves sympathetic to the tax-payer funded deviance that goes on away from the public eye.  No matter what, viewers will be sucked into the inner circle, and may find themselves not wanting to leave.

Yes Prime Minister is back for another tour in London, exhibiting the best of British comedy. It has only a 10-week run this time around, at the Apollo Theatre, with both evening and matinee performances.
