The Lost Womble
Chris Macdonald
Although I admire the hardcore ecological attitudes of The Wombles, give any one of them a box of crayons and they’d probably just end choking on them.
Chris Macdonald is not a Womble, but not only does he also manage to make use of the things that ‘everyday folk’ eg. lazy bastards leave behind, he can turn them into something special – ‘found object sculpture’
Deep within his Dali-esque workshop, Chris has collected the contents of various skips, flea market stalls and the offcasts of both friends and strangers – ‘chosen for their design, material, or power to evoke’.
His pleasingly surrealist spin means that the pieces he creates out of this so-called crap have sold for up to £2,000 and despite the slightly frightening price tags, he is happy to have you come along to the gallery and handle any one of them. He’d be even happier if you’d like to commission one for yourself.
Chris alludes to a mysterious near death experience in 2004 as the reason for his determination to produce a noted body of work. Whatever that might have been, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t nearly choking to death on a crayon.
