Scott Rhodes - Government Poster Artist
An interview with designer Scott Rhodes
Government poster, Scott Rhodes
Our latest free poster on the theme of Government was designed by Scott Rhodes, a fine art graduate from Batley School of Art and Design. He believes that "a children's annual is for life not just for Christmas, a fun packed adventure that can last a lifetime", and prints over them in much of his work.
Tell us how your poster communicates Government.
I wanted to play around with the theme and approach it light heartedly as I don't know enough to make big statements about it. All I can tell you is that my grandma always used to tell me that, “You can’t trust a man with a moustache or a politician.” Using both these ideas together seemed to come naturally to me. A flock of moustache wearing bird-men watching over us from the clouds of smog gathered over the capital, listening in and spying.

A lot of your work involves illustration over found photography. What's wrong with plain paper?
Plain paper does have its advantages but I'm keen on creating new life out of the old, recycling, revamping and remaking. Found images and text are suggestible, they already have a purpose. I poke and prod at them and cut and draw and re-manipulate and re-word them to make them new, different and mine.

The Dogs Bollocks & Mrs. Corbett
Why did you give Ronnie Corbett tits?
Ronnie Corbett? I do believe it to be a lady from before his time. I think I found this page in an old BBC annual from the 1950’s, perhaps even earlier. She does bare an uncanny resemblance though.

The Queen Installed the Royal Family in the Magic Box
If you were an MP, what would you claim expenses for?
Bus fare as I am not eligible for a student bus pass anymore, colouring crayons, scalpel blades, glue sticks, Hob Nobs, cigarettes, annuals, new collar for my dog, ice pops, girlfriend’s hair, tips after meals, light bulbs, dancing classes, direct debits, phone bills and charity money, balloons on my birthday and a clown and party poppers, lottery tickets, cash machine charges, TV licence, envelopes, knives, forks and spoons, interest on my overdraft, arm bands, all the 20 pence’s I’ve put in a sweetie machine, salt and pepper, socks, shaving foam, shoe laces, hand cream, rubber gloves, vitamin tablets, Tamagotchi , student loan, a sand pit with buckets and spades, paint, dental charges, toothpaste…
All the things that are a given really.
