Matthew the Horse

We have been a fan of Matthew the Horse since we saw his work on Dollop flyers. You can also catch his art in the Guardian and right now he has an exhibition on at Jaguar Shoes in the ditch.

Hello Matthew, please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

Hello. My name is Matthew Hodson. If I was a horse, my name would be Matthew the Horse. At the moment I'm living in Leeds where I like to draw and create images. I’ve been doing this for a while now and I also teach graphics and illustration at a local art school. I have fun with my pictures and I am always trying to get better.

How would you describe your style? Who are you influenced by?

I like shapes and lines. I like to communicate ideas visually. I like things that are silly and weird. I am influenced by creatives who are brave and who work with integrity. There is so much great stuff being made all the time but my personal heroes are people like Marcus Oakely, Kim Hiorthoy, Mat Brinkman, C.F, Will Sweeny… and Eric Cantona.

What will you be showing at your exhibition at Jaguar Shoes?

There'll be a selection of my illustration work but the show is really about my comics. I've been making comics on and off for about six years. You'll be able to see how my drawing powers have evolved over time. Some of my early stories are rude and lots of them are silly. Even though actually some of them are drawn really badly, they still make me laugh so I'm going to show them.

Dollop - University of the Arts posterTell us about your work for the Guardian and Dollop and any other interesting commissions.

I'm doing regular editorial work for The Guardian which is usually printed on the back of the sport section. These jobs often have really short deadlines, sometimes as little as an hour. This can lead to some really interesting and exciting results. Though it can be a bit stressful, I love working this way. I've been doing the art work for Dollop since its early days in Nottingham. I did the first ever flyer for it; it was just a drawing of a man with a beard. It was rubbish but we all loved it. We've got a really radical idea for the new series of Dollop flyers. Don’t throw them away! As the months go by, the flyers will all match up.

How much social commentary is there in your work?

There is no point doing this unless you have an opinion. I've been thinking about what we're all going to do next. I know lots of wonderful people who can't figure out their next move. Have a butchers at the comic on my site called The Black Punks. When my pen runs out, I would like to live somewhere windy.

Are you laughing at us?

Don't worry. Come here, give me some spuds. I like your shoes. How was your day? Let's go to the chippy. Good times.
