Folie à Deux
New pop-up gallery launches at Utrophia
This November sees the launch of an exciting new pop-up gallery venture, Folie a Deux, with an exhibition entitledI have this strange kind of feeling and I just can’t place it… to be held at New Cross’s vibrant Utrophia Project Space – an old ice cream factory-turned art gallery and events space. The enigmatic title and the signature image for the show of what would appear to be a view through the keyhole of the Red Room from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, reflects the organisers longing to inject their love of magic and great art into London’s gallery scene.
The exhibition is a group show displaying the work of five artists: Judith Lyons, Nina Mankin, Giulia Ricci,Keith Roberts and Nina Royleand will open on November 11 with a special ‘synaesthetic’ performance by celebrated Columbian Jazz musician Mauricio Velasierra. There will also be a free Alternative-Folk music night on November 20 with performances by some of the most emerging and young folk talent around Dear Winesburg, Amber States and The Mariner’s Children front-man, Benedict Rubenstein, taking place in Utrophia’s intimate and cosy detached barn space.
The artists in the show all engage with the notion of our ‘environment’ in diverse yet equally insightful, thought-provoking and beautiful ways. Their approaches range from delicate installations unlocking the poetic qualities of the flotsam and jetsam produced by today’s disposable society, to camera-less photographs exploring the impact of scientific advances on the natural world. Other works investigate the roles played by memory and emotion in our perception of the world around us, or consider the finely-balanced relationship betweenchaos and order underpinning the systems of both mankind and nature.Together, these reflective piecessubtly reveal our complex relationship with our environment, the ways in which we shape it, and are in turn shaped by it.
Folie à Deux (‘a madness shared by two’) is a collaborative venture that aims to promote thoughtful and provocative contemporary art through temporary exhibitions and music nights around London. The aim is to make the visual arts the focal point of a wider programme of music, social and cultural events, in order to enjoy London's exciting and dynamic arts community to the full. This is the first exhibition of many.
I have this strange kind of feeling and I just can’t place it… is at Folie à Deux at Utrophia Project Space, 126 Tanners Hill, New Cross from November 11.
