EMILY DATES... MAN LIKE ME

EMILY DATES... MAN LIKE ME

Emily is back!!! After a "mutual break-up" with her boyfriend, we put her back on the game for a Valentine's special, doing what she does best - dating musicians. This time it's the turn of Johnny from Man Like Me, who has a new single out called Single Dad.

The phone conversation went something like this:

Me: “I broke up with my boyfriend.”

Editor: “You’ll be alright Em; you’re good at being single.”

Me: “But it's Valentine’s weekend! (hint hint)”

Editor: “What you need is a good night out. Get your mojo back. I’ll sort something out.”

Me: “Thank you.”

Editor: “No problem.”

So off I skipped in my skinny black jeans (much tighter after months of nights in on the sofa) to Deviate at The Scala in Kings Cross. I was meeting up with Johnny from Man Like Me. I’d seen the band play a few times while out and about in North London so I knew I’d have a laugh. These guys specialise in high energy cheeky tunes… the banter was bound to be good. The date didn’t get off to the greatest start…

Johnny: “So who dumped who?”

Me: “It was mutual.” (slightly too defensively)

He gave me a rye smile and a sympathetic nod. Bollocks. Now I look like a sad, dumped liar. Need to turn this around quickly.

Me: “So where do you normally take a girl for Valentine's?”

Johnny: “I don’t know… Wetherspoon’s?”

Me: “Wetherspoon’s? Why?”

Johnny: “Cos it’s quiet. You can always get a seat and never have to queue at the bar.”

Thinking about it, this did make perfect sense. I immediately liked Johnny. He’s obviously got a good sense of who he is (you have to be a certain type of person to carry off Burberry print trousers) and he’s a good looking boy. He did, however, get distracted quite persistently. He was helping his friend DJ because he’d forgotten his glasses (it was amusing to watch). There was also a gaggle of blonde lovelies floating around him, which was rather disconcerting. Me and Oli (the photographer) went and had a little dance (I tried not to get too carried away… Emily + dancing = pointing and laughing) and a few drinks. Johnny came back and we had a chat in the quiet bit at the top of the venue.

Me: “So how’s the band going?”

Johnny: “Yeah it’s good. I’m starting a new one at the moment.”

Me: “Really? What are you going to be called?” (Johnny looks at me completely baffled).

Johnny: “I can’t remember.”

Me: “You can’t remember the name of your own band?”

Johnny: “That’s the weirdest thing. I just can’t remember.”

I know the feeling. I know I had a good night, and I know we had fun... and I do remember chatting to him for ages, but it’s all a bit of an echo in my head now (or a persistent throb). This aside, I can feel the twinkle in my eye reigniting - I definitely have my mojo back.

Look out for Single Dad. It's pretty bloody good. And see more MLM here.
