Street Fonts celebrates the beauty of graffiti writing. Claudia Walde spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists - all of whom have roots in graffiti - from thirty countries, with a view to showing the many different styles of lettering within graffiti and street art cultures.
As graffiti artists tend to print the same letters of their tag again and again, they rarely design complete alphabets. Walde set them each the same brief: to design all twenty-six letters of the Latin alphabet. Their approach to the task and how they selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them, and the results are a fascinating insight into the creative process.
Some artists are world-renowned such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa), Inkie (UK) and Hera (Germany); others are lesser known or only now starting to emerge. Street Fonts, with over one hundred and fifty original alphabets exclusive to this book, shows a wide range of styles from classic old-school graffiti letter forms to modern font designs. It will be a source of inspiration for experienced writers, type designers and beginners alike.
